According to Abdul-Azeez Adediran, commonly known as Jandor, who was the party's candidate for the Lagos State governorship in 2023. During an appearance on Channels Television's Politics Today on Tuesday, Jandor, who resigned from the PDP the previous day, expressed that the ongoing internal conflicts within the party have led to this disillusionment.
He highlighted the leadership turmoil at the party's national headquarters as a significant source of embarrassment, particularly criticizing the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, who has faced backlash from party members for the internal issues following the replacement of Iyorchia Ayu.
The situation has been further complicated by a contention over the National Secretary position, with both Senator Samuel Anyanwu and former National Youth Leader, Sunday Ude-Okoye, competing for the role.
In recent months, tensions have intensified, exacerbating divisions within critical party structures, including the Board of Trustees, the National Working Committee, and the National Executive Committee.
Particularly troubling is the situation in the South-South region, where a zonal congress held on February 22 occurred without the approval of the governors, adding to the complexities.
Jandor characterized the crises at both national and state levels as detrimental to the PDP's reputation. He remarked, “Who would take pride in identifying as a PDP member given the current circumstances at both levels? The perception is unfavorable.”
He further noted, “The party itself seems to have lost faith in its own capabilities. A political party is fundamentally a collective of individuals; it cannot function in isolation. If the same detrimental dynamics persist within that group, the issues will continue. Currently, the party is influenced by those who have opposed it. Where do we even start? We are approaching another election cycle.”
