The House of Representatives has instructed Multichoice, the parent company of Pay TV services DStv and GOtv, to suspend the planned increase in subscription rates in light of the current economic conditions.
Recently, the entertainment provider announced a rise in its subscription fees, indicating that starting March 1, customers subscribed to the DStv premium package would see their rates increase from N37,000 to N44,500, while those on the Compact+ plan would pay N30,000 instead of N25,000. Additionally, subscribers on the compact packages would face a new fee of N19,000, up from N17,000.
This directive was issued following the passage of a motion by Esosa Iyawe, a member of the All Progressives Congress representing Edo State.
He stated, “The House acknowledges that Multichoice, which operates the Pay TV services DStv and GOtv, has recently declared an increase in the prices of all its packages in Nigeria, attributing this to economic factors that have led to higher operational costs.
“The House also recognizes that this 20-25 percent increase in subscription fees marks the second such rise within a year, with the previous increase occurring in May 2024.
“We are alarmed that the increase in May 2024 provoked significant public backlash, forcing many Nigerians, already grappling with escalating living costs, to abandon their decoders while expressing concerns over the lack of competition in the pay-TV market.
“We are further troubled that Multichoice's dominant position in the pay-TV industry means that price hikes have far-reaching consequences, placing undue financial strain on consumers.”
He also noted that “The recent increase has sparked considerable discontent among subscribers, many of whom have taken to social media to voice their dissatisfaction regarding the frequent price hikes that do not align with any improvements in service quality.”
