As the November 8, 2025, governorship election in Anambra State approaches, political tensions are escalating. The All Progressives Congress and the Labour Party are poised to challenge the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance for dominance in the upcoming race. Ikenna Obianeri explores public expectations, electoral preparations, and the notable absence of a candidate from the Peoples Democratic Party, which has not fielded an aspirant with less than eight months remaining until the election.
The political atmosphere is becoming increasingly dynamic and tumultuous, particularly in anticipation of the party primaries for the main opposition parties—the All Progressives Congress and the Labour Party—as well as the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance. Currently, it appears that the Peoples Democratic Party may not present a candidate, as no individual has reportedly acquired the party's nomination form.
The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced that political parties will begin their primaries for the 2025 Anambra State governorship election on March 20, 2025, with the process expected to conclude by April 10, 2025. Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, emphasized the necessity for political parties to comply with the election timetable in a statement issued on March 6, 2025, while confirming that the governorship election is set for November 8, 2025. As per INEC, 12 out of the 19 registered political parties in the country have submitted their schedules for the primaries thus far. The commission highlighted that early submissions facilitate effective monitoring in accordance with Section 84 of the Electoral Act, 2022.
