Itee Akrasi, a resident of Akwa Ibom, experienced persistent discomfort in the form of small, reddish, and itchy bumps whenever she utilized hair extensions. The use of colored extensions or hair dye resulted in significant swelling and itching on her face, hands, and feet, lasting for a full day.
Due to the discomfort associated with these products, Akrasi ultimately decided to cut her long, beautiful natural hair. She noted that the rashes would appear whenever the extensions, regardless of their color, particularly synthetic ones, made contact with her neck or any exposed skin.
The source of her distress was attributed to the chemicals present in the extensions and dyes. Akrasi remarked, “Any synthetic extension that is rigid, irrespective of its color, triggers an immediate reaction upon contact with my skin, leading to rashes in the affected areas.”
She expressed her aversion to harsh extensions or those containing strong chemicals that come into contact with her skin due to the adverse reactions they provoke. Having returned to traditional hair plaiting, she has opted to avoid dyes and now exclusively uses human hair extensions.
Akrasi recounted, “In the past, whenever I dyed my hair, the dye would cause my face, hands, and legs to swell throughout the day. During my low-cut phase, I experimented with various hair colors, but each time, my face, palms, and feet would swell and itch for 24 hours post-application before gradually subsiding.”
Despite her profession as a hairstylist, which necessitates handling various types and colors of extensions and dyes, Akrasi has taken precautions to mitigate reactions. She now wears gloves while styling or applying dyes to her clients to avoid direct skin contact with these products.
For Blessing Omoniyi, the process of hair styling has always been a daunting experience. Each upcoming salon appointment brought with it a wave of anxiety. It was only recently that Omoniyi identified her allergy to hair extensions as the underlying issue.
