Emerging fencing talent Inkosi Brou has earned Nigeria's inaugural medal at the 2025 African Junior Fencing Championships taking place in Luanda, Angola.
As the grandson of the former Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Dora Akunyili, Brou showcased his developing skills at the Almaty Saber FIE Junior World Cup from February 14 to 16, prior to his journey to Angola where he secured a medal for his country.
Representing Nigeria from abroad, Brou delivered an outstanding performance, exemplifying skill, determination, and the competitive spirit characteristic of Nigerian athletes. His accomplishment further enhances Nigeria's growing reputation in the realm of international fencing.
Another talented Nigerian fencer, Peluola Akinbamiro, was also poised to make an impact in the competition; however, she unfortunately missed her initial bout due to a last-minute schedule alteration that was not communicated in a timely manner.
Despite this challenge, she maintained her focus and resolve, embodying the resilience that is emblematic of Nigeria's expanding fencing community.
“This achievement signifies a pivotal moment for the Nigerian Fencing Federation, highlighting our progress in the sport through rigorous training, strategic collaborations, and remarkable accomplishments. Brou, an athlete based in the United States, secured the only medal for a Sub-Saharan African nation on March 1,” stated NFF president Adeyinka Samuel.
“Competing on the global stage presents both opportunities and challenges for this young athlete. Brou’s commitment to representing Nigeria, despite his upbringing in the United States, illustrates his passion and dedication. His journey from an unranked 15-year-old in October 2023 to his current achievements signifies substantial advancement.
“With a promising start to the year and a historic medal victory in Angola, the Nigerian Fencing Federation remains dedicated to fostering talent and promoting the sport.”
